Newport News Park, VA

Newport News Park is a frequent site of wilderness races with available camping and local hotels.

Teams Any three (3) people with an interest in wilderness medicine. There are no divisions based on age, gender, or medical skill level. Only teams of three (3). No less, no more.
Possible Race Components
  • Land: Hiking, Running, Orienteering, Climbing, Ropes Elements, Mountain Biking
  • Water: Canoeing, Stream/River Crossing, and Wading
  • Preparation: Gear, Food, Water, Medical Supplies, Etc.
  • Wilderness Medicine: Knowledge and Skills
Race Format * (subject to change) Teams will race on a course featuring multiple distinct loops. Orienteering will be highly emphasized. Each loop will contain questions and hand-on scenarios, designed to test your academic and practical knowledge of wilderness medicine. Penalties for each wrong answer will be assessed. You may carry any references you see fit to answer these questions/scenarios correctly, however you must carry whatever you bring for the entire race, and there is a chance you and your gear may get wet. This race will be to completion. The first team to cross the finish line will win the race.
Required Equipment
  • One mountain bike and cycling helmet per team (All team members should be able to ride the bike.)
  • One aluminum canoe, paddles, & pfds (Rentals available and included in cost; reserve with registration)
  • Some safety items will be provided unless specifically listed, but participants must bring any and all other items they feel will be necessary to compete (backpacks, medical kits, food, water, medical texts, clothing, gear, etc.).
  • A finalized required gear list will be posted prior to race day.
  • GPS units, cell phones, and other forms of communication are prohibited. Also prohibited is any means of transportation other than those specified in the race.
  • First, second, and third place teams will receive prizes.
  • All participants receive a t-shirt and water bottle

  • Cost $150/team (3 people) (includes canoe rental)
  • Late Registration $165/team on or after March 1.
  • Registration will close when we reach 30 teams or 2 weeks before the race date. After that email us for availability.
Cancellation policy: Full refund until 4 weeks prior to race. 1/2 refund until 2 weeks before the race. No refund within 2 weeks of the race (Saturday 2 weeks before). Team members may be substituted at anytime until Check-In on Race Day. Please let Race Directors know of any substitutions.
Registration Includes

Team members each receive a canoe rental, souvenir race t-shirt, souvenir water bottle, race day insurance, and a delectable post-race meal. A race bib (number), topographic map and trail map are also provided on race day for navigational purposes.

Accommodations Camping is available at the Newport News Park. You need to reserve a space in advance. Camping sites range from $30-35 + tax. Some camping sites have showers and power. Max 5 people and 2 tents per camp site. Reservations can be made by phone at 757-888-3333 or toll free at 1-800-203-8322. MasterCard & Visa accepted. Tell them you are with MedWAR to reserve. There are also numerous hotels in the area.
Race Support This race is self-supported, and competitors are expected to either carry their own water or purify it during the course of the race. Any assistance received from the race staff will result in disqualification. Participants must bring items they feel will be necessary to compete (backpacks, medical kits, food, water, medical texts, clothing, gear, etc).
CME/CE Credit We are pleased to offer CME credits for Physicians & PAs for participation in this race. We are also offering CEUs for Nurses/NP (7 VNA contact hours) and EMS providers (Continuing Education Advanced Life Support EMS Providers).
This activity is approved for by the Virginia Office of EMS for 7 hours of category 1 continuing education. Details posted on the CME/CE page. You MUST apply ahead of time to get credit. Cost for CME/CEU credits is included in registration fee.
The Fine Print This adventure race requires physical exertion. While most persons in good physical health should be able to compete, racers should be prepared for potential physical exhaustion. Teams must be entirely self-sufficient during the race (food and water MUST be carried). Expected race finish times is 6-10 hours and racers will cover 10-15 miles. Weather and darkness may play a role, but the race will take place rain or shine.
